First Edition. “Holland in 1799, Egypt, Friedland campaign, commanded Loyal Lusitanians in Portugal, British commissioner with Russian and Austrian Armies from 1812 to 1814” (Sandler). Also previously in the Revolutionary Wars, Prémont, Villers-en-Cauchies, Lannoy, Roubaix, and Mouveaux, “in the disastrous retreat on the 18th to Templeuve, when he commanded the rearguard, and when the light cavalry, according to an eyewitness, ‘performed wonders of valour’” (ODNB) and Boxtel-on-the-Dommel where he was involved in the capture of “an aide-de-camp of General Vandamme and two gendarmes”; the capture of the Cape with Baird and Popham; later important diplomacy in Russia.

2 volumes, 8vo (225 × 142 mm). Contemporary scarlet full calf, double gilt fillet panel to the boards, spine gilt in compartments, dark blue and sage green labels, marbled edges, an Eton leaving gift Louis H. Symonds from A.G. Schneider. Engraved portrait frontispiece from a miniature by Cosway, to Volume I. Frontispiece a little foxed, light marginal browning, binding a little rubbed, otherwise very good.
