New and Revised Edition with a new introduction, biographical note on the Cunningham family and bibliography. First published in 1849, this book, though a critical and popular success, was to be the cause of the premature end to a highly successful military career. Following service om the staff of Sir Napier, Gough, Sir Harry Smith, and Hardinge in the First Sikh War he was made agent at Bhopal, a lucrative and relatively undemanding position. In his newly-acquired leisure he compiled the present history which was to assure his name as an historia, but also brought about his downfall. His assertion that Lal Singh and Tej Singh had been bribed during the First Sikh War was challenged by Hardinge and Sir Henry Lawrence and in 1850 Cunningham was removed from his agency and returned to regimental duty. Within a year he had died at Umballa aged only 39.

8vo. Original blue cloth. Map frontispiece, coloured in outline, similar folding map, genealogical table. Half-title and last blank slightly browned, mild marginal foxing, else very good, cloth a little rubbed and sunned, spine relined.
