First Edition. Elworthy was a largely self-taught philologist and antiquary, whose The Grammar of the Dialect of West Somerset was described by James Murray as, “the first grammar of an English dialect of any scientific value.” Elworthy was one of Murray’s “most zealous volunteer lieutenants” in the compilation of OED, contributing, with his wife and daughters, more than 15,000 quotations for the dictionary. The present work was the outcome of extensive travels in Europe, and is still considered to be a valuable contribution to the literature.
