First Edition. John Sterling was a young clergyman and writer, much influenced by Coleridge, and the son of the editor of The Times; he was one of Carlyle's key friends in the decade following their introduction in 1835. Sterling had died in 1844, and Carlyle's biography "contains a memorably vivid but hostile pen-portrait of Coleridge, based on Carlyle's visit to Highgate in 1824" (ODNB). The book was objectionable to contemporaries for what many saw as Carlyle's atheism.

8vo. Contemporary half calf, sometime rebacked. Early ownership inscription at head of title. Extremities a little worn, binding firm, contents clean.
